Abstract
The design and construction methods in use for dams fall far short of the obtainable economy and safety because of the complexity of the problems involved in space structures. To avoid these complexities the thickness of dams is generally increased, thus sacrificing economy to attain illusory safety. The possible extreme stresses in dams computed by the shell theory are presented as is a comparison of the economy and safety of various dams. It is shown that the laminated arch dam with forked abutments can be most practically realized in a leaf-spring type shell dam that has prestressed abutments and is constructed by the use of sliding forms.
