Algae Responsible for Odor and Taste in Water Supplies

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 119, Issue 1

Abstract

Odors and tastes in public water supplies are the result of decomposed organic matter, mineral substances, or hydrogen sulfide. The most common origins of odor and taste in water supplies are plant growths of the algae type. Algae are simple forms of plant life-most species requiring warm temperature, sunlight, and suitable food for development. The algae spores of the various organisms are transported by wind, animals, or other physical means in the same manner as bacteria, yeast, or other plant seeds. Most algae are microscopic and may vary in size and shape from a single cell to filaments, chains, or groups of cells. There are thousands of variously colored species of algae. It is impossible to become acquainted with more than a few of the most prominent species which are responsible for odor and taste in water supplies.
