Abstract

Scour in wide, steep rivers during floods is not general throughout the flooded reach since deposition occurs at wide sections. The measurements of river action are almost always made at narrow sections, causing a misconception that is not supported by studies of the transported sediment. In the design of a project for the protection and rehabilitation of the middle Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico, the question of the depth of scour of the river beds during floods assumed unusual importance. A study was made, therefore, to determine this depth. The study, its results, and revised theories based on it are explained in this paper.
