Abstract
For controlling pressure surges following interruption of electric power to a pumping plant, the air chamber has certain advantages over other devices. If simplifying assumptions are made, surge conditions in a pump-discharge line having an air chamber can be expressed in terms of three other variables. The purpose of this paper is to present charts by which the required size of an air chamber for a particular pumping installation can be quickly determined for preliminary design purposes. The references, theories, and assumptions necessary for preparation of the charts are presented. An example is included that demonstrates the use of the charts.
