Future Possibilities in Civil Engineering

Abstract
The influences acting on the future of civil engineering are discussed in this paper. The present era is a time of transition. Rationalism is replacing empiricism, and civil engineering is becoming a dynamic branch of applied science The various factors to be considered by the major branches of the profession in the future are outlined. Fresh opportunities, presented by the development of materials and methods, will occupy the future. New areas of service will open, requiring the skill and knowledge of well-trained civil engineers. The paper also discusses trends which have developed.
