Solving Highway Traffic Problems

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2

Abstract

Among the liabilities of the automobile era is what appears to be a continuous traffic emergency—how to accommodate 50,000,000 cars with existing thoroughfares, particularly city streets and parking facilities. Money and accident losses are staggering. In planning to conquer the problem, all sorts of traffic facts and habits have to be determined through research by government, state, and city, with particular emphasis of course on the accident nightmare. One great help has been the trained traffic engineer, finding his most fruitful field in the cities. Experience shows many examples of how the problem is being intelligently attacked, and gives confidence that advanced engineering can evolve the best solution.
