Forward Steps in Irrigation Engineering
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2
Abstract
Irrigation in the United States has greatly expanded during the 50 years that the Bureau of Reclamation, United States Department of the Interior, has been active—5,000,000 acres are now served by government construction. At the same time growing needs have been met by refinements of designing practice, exemplified by advances in high dams, through trial-load analysis, temperature and crack control, and model testing. Although not so spectacular, methods used in earth-dam construction have also progressed, and mechanical equipment has been perfected. In all 20,000 miles of canals have been built. Studies have also improved operating and maintenance procedures for the vast system. Construction innovations have been introduced, through mechanized equipment and large-scale contracting- for concrete work, earth moving, and canal lining. Power development and pumping plants are now functional parts of the great irrigation enterprise.
