Iron and Steel Production, 1851-1951
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2
Abstract
The true value of industrial production is its contribution to the economic welfare and strength of the United States. It is the proud achievement of American iron and steel to have won during the past 100 years, and to hold unchallenged today, the enviable position among aU manufacturing industries as the foremost agent in building the present national economy. Zeal and inventive capacity led from the Bessemer process to the open hearth and the electric furnace; from the beehive oven to the by product coke plant, with all its ramifications; and from hand-operated sheet-plate and tin-plate rolls to multimachine continuous hot-rolled and cold-rolled wide strip mills, handling half of today's steel production. This glorious record can be projected into the future, but only through a sane appreciation of, and adequate provision for safeguarding, the American free economy.
