Lowering Concrete Costs by Improved Techniques
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2
Abstract
Concrete construction has benefited greatly from improved designing, advancing technology, and field techniques. In the office, methods evolved to combat cracking in large dams have succeeded, yielding truly monolithic masses. In the laboratory, improvements have been devise d and perfected, especially in air entrainment, aggregate selection, and special cements. On the job, numerous refinements are appearing: In more consistent fine aggregates for the newer concretes; in automatic mixer production, for economy and control; in more efficient handling plant, especially cableways and trestles; and in advanced mechanical equipment, such as vibrators. Thus better products and longer life spell greater economies, as illustrated mainly by the bigger projects. However, smaller jobs also have gained, particularly in improved equipment, largely for transporting and placing concrete.
