The Engineering Profession in Evolution
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2
Abstract
The role of the professional engineering society is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to enlarge technical knowledge and strengthen professional practice through the sharing of technical understandings and ideas and the exchange of practical experiences. On the other, it seeks to strengthen and extend those high standards of professional conduct and service which have characterized engineering from its earliest beginnings some fifty centuries ago. Although, through evolution and additions to its ranks, the profession today comprises some half dozen or more major branches of specialized interest and, in many cases, of diverse origins, these ancient and fundamental concepts and standards, these basic aims and ideals of professional practice which are common to all of them, give a unity of purpose and conduct which holds together these different groups in one professional family.
