Schools Illustrate Progress in the Use of Wood

Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 118, Issue 2

Abstract

Historically, from the days of the “little red schoolhouse," wood has been the accepted material for such structures. With modern advances in adaptation, fittings, and design, timber has again asserted its dominance. Nowadays, the large multipurpose union school, also of wood, has supplanted a group of many local, single-room buildings. Usually it has a single story, with emphasis on lighting, security against earthquake shocks, and a multiplicity of uses. The transition, as illustrated by California's experience, has introduced many difficult problems that the structural engineer has been forced to meet-and to solve successfully.
