Abstract
Although the earliest attempts to test electronic instruments for use in surveying and mapping began as recently as the latter stages of World War II, much has been accomplished in a brief time. Electronic instruments have been rised or tested in the following surveying fields:
1.
Hydrographic surveying;
2.
Airborne magnetometer surveys;
3.
Measurement of long distances for geodetic control purposes;
4.
Photogrammetry, in which their application is twofold:
Accurate flight-line navigation, and
Geodetic control of individual photographs;
5.
Measurement of short distances—that is, distances ordinarily associated with conventional ground triangulation;
6.
Topographic surveyirtg for both distance and direction measurements; and
7.
Vertica1 control in photogrammetry.
Clearly all branches of surveying and mapping are being influenced by these new developments. The purpose of this paper is to review these aspects of, electronic surveying practices.
