Abstract
An account of the planning and design considerations entering into the development of irrigation features of multiple-purpose projects of the Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), United States Department of the Interior is presented in this paper. Reviewed are the major factors affecting irrigation development and their attendant engineering implications, the elements of an irrigation system, and the influence of economics on design. Also the principal features of three reclamation multiple-purpose projects are discussed. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of irrigation's future importance in the over-all social and economic aspects of water and land resource development.
