Abstract
Pumice has been used as an aggregate in concrete to give it light weight thermal insulating value, and certain other characteristics not usually associated with hard rock concrete. The experience of the United States Navy at Inyokern, Calif., has confirmed the fact that pumice concrete can be mixed and placed like any other concrete except that presaturation of the pumice is required and care must be exercised not to over vibrate the mixture. The strength of pumice concrete is controlled by the volume of cement used per cubic yard. Generally, one additional sack of cement is required per cubic yard to obtain the same strength as hard rock concrete.
