Abstract

A simple and accurate method for computing the flexural constants (shape and load constants) of haunched beams is presented in this paper. For a haunched beam considered as simply supported, the various end “angle changes” are used as the flexural constants, whose values are computed from the various “momental” (moment of area) diagrams of the absolute or relative reciprocal I-diagram, all about one end of the beam. The method differs from existing methods mainly in the following two respects: (1) The various angle changes are computed from the reciprocal I-diagram instead of from the M/I-diagram as in the usual moment-area method for computing beam deflections; and (2) the values of the various moments of the reciprocal I-diagram are computed from the areas of its respective momental diagrams, obtained one from another, simply by multiplying the ordinates of the preceding diagram by their respective moment arms, instead of summing up, always inaccurately, the moments of its many elementary areas of triangular, trapezoidal, or even rectangular shape, as in the usual methods.
