Abstract
The theoretical and experimental background of the published theory of highway transition curve design is explored in this paper. The writer shows (1) that the theory is fallacious in its disregard of the superelevation, and (2) that the experimental evidence produced for it is questionable. A modified theory, called “the lateral force theory,” is outlined. Experimental evidence is produced to show that the length of the transition curve is not a matter of great importance, and the proposal is made that it should be made a fixed proportion of the total length of the curve. It is also shown that the transition need not necessarily be spiral in form.
