Abstract
The story of the Massachusetts Geodetic Survey is that of the matching of two needs with one opportunity. This is not in its generality so very different from the ideal that underlies, in theory, the pattern of all projects to which the Federal Government lent support. Within the province of engineering there are certain special areas of knowledge in which advance has been halted and is awaiting some outside form of impulse.
