Abstract
No novelty attaches to siphons used as waste ways, but the design of siphons for close regulation of water levels, for example, in the forebay of power plants, by discharging continuously through a wide range of flow, marks a distinct advance in such structures and offers opportunities for putting siphons to uses not heretofore contemplated.
This paper describes tests made on two new siphons designed as regulators of the forebay level at the Walterville Hydro-Electric Plant, a unit of the municipal power system of Eugene, Ore. Each of these siphons is capable of discharging continuously any rate between 100% and 3% of its maximum capacity. Working in unison the pair has a maximum discharging capacity of 1 050 cu ft per sec and a minimum of 11 cu ft per sec, so that, considered as a unit, they have a discharging range of from 1 % to 100 % of their maximum.
