Abstract
Several methods of determining the permeability of an earth over-burden which forms the foundation for a proposed dam are outlined in this paper. They are based on the assumption that either or both of two general sources of information is available: (1) Dry samples from bore-hole investigations; and (2) the effect of pumping upon the ground-water conditions in that overburden. These methods were developed in connection with permeability determinations at the sites of the Main Dam and Dike of Quabbin Reservoir, 65 miles west of Boston, Mass., so that in order to describe fully and clearly the methods and their practicable applications much of the text deals with the particular conditions at those sites.
