Abstract
In order to take care of the vehicular traffic concentrating at the west end of the Holland Tunnel, between Jersey City, N: J., and New York, N. Y., the New Jersey State Highway Commission began in 1924 the construction of a “super-highway,” leading from the tunnel through Jersey City, Kearny, Newark, and Elizabeth, to connection with existing or new State highways. The construction of this highway was completed in 1932.
As this “super-highway” necessarily had to go through built-up sections of cities, and through other sections highly developed for railroad and industrial purposes, and as it was expected to carry a large volume of traffic, it was decided at the inception of the work to build it so as to avoid grade crossings throughout the greater part of its length.
In this paper are discussed the general aspects of the design of this highway, which included embankments, viaducts, high-level bridges, and a subway, with their ramp connections to the surface streets.
