Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present a rational analysis of the stresses occurring in a continuous reinforced concrete structure which, due to variations in moisture content and in temperature, is subject to linear expansions or contractions. Formulas and diagrams are given whereby the required reinforcement may be determined for any combination of the various agencies which produce volume changes. Although cracks in structures of this kind cannot be entirely avoided it is possible, through suitable reinforcement, to make the individual cracks exceedingly small. It is shown, however, that the ratio of steel to concrete required for this purpose is relatively high and, in many cases, it will be considered prohibitive.
