Abstract
The field of Western highway construction is so widespread and each locality offers so many varied problems that it is only possible to cover a small part of it. The writer, therefore, does not propose to cumber the already voluminous literature of highway engineering with repetitive descriptions of problems or the methods used in the solution of problems already common to highway engineers from their own experience or reading. The paper contains an outline of the methods used in solving certain construction problems of a nature unusual to Eastern terrain and to indicate some of the controls which have been applied in the Western States to those forces of Nature which, unless properly curbed, are destructive to the works of Man.
