Abstract
Land drainage in the past 150 years has had an important part in the development of American agriculture and in the improvement of the public health. Complete statistics of drainage have not been compiled, but 50 000 000 acres added to the cultivable land area in the United States and an equal amount made more productive and profitable doubtless would be a conservative estimate of the benefit to agriculture. The benefits to health would be exceedingly difficult to measure, but it is known from early records that malaria was generally prevalent in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio, where drainage is most complete, and that it is rn11ch loss common in those States today. The experience in the South, also, has been that after drainage the extent and seriousness of malaria have generally diminished.
