Abstract
Disease-bearing mosquitoes have played an important part in the early settlement and development of all countries in the temperate and tropical zones of the Western Hemisphere. The second expedition of Columbus was nearly wrecked by them at Santo Domingo, and, later, Prescott wrote of mosquito-borne disease as follows: “The moment a town is founded, or a commercial center created, it is certain to cause the explosion of the latent malignity of poison in the air.” In early days the Colonies suffered severely from both yellow fever and malaria. Quinine was scarce and costly, and other remedies used for malaria had little value.
