The Engineer In the Lumber Industry
Publication: Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers
Volume 92, Issue 1
Abstract
Sawing boards seems a simple task. It was in the old days of the single circular saw which replaced the primitive whip-saw and when the market was usually within the radius of one day's journey by horse from the mill. Those days are gone. Now turbines generate electricity which drives the great handsaws and the many varieties of special machines with a speed and accuracy unknown a few years ago. With the old machines went the long hours, and the mills and camps of the Northwest have had the eight-hour day for more than eight years.
