Abstract
The modern city is a product -of science-applied to manufacture, to transportation, and to modes of living. It reveals in its conditions of growth that science may deflect the path of society and still do little or nothing- to arrest the weaknesses that accompany the changes or movements inherent in human action. Yet the science that has brought about so much progress in the arts of industry and transportation, apparently could, if applied collectively on a wide community bas is, make for better cities. It must be admitted, however, that whatever social progress may be attained, or expected, in this direction, by means of ph3rsical improvements, can only lessen and not remove defects in living and working conditions.
