Abstract
The general history of the principles underlying the development of modern practice in steel design has been quite fully set forth in the report of the Society's Special Committee on Stresses in Structural Steelt-especially with reference to unit stresses. The stress of 16 000 lb. per sq. in., has a rather ancient tradition, and is based to a considerable extent on standard railroad bridge practice. It has had an undue influence on specifications for other purposes, and the conditions under which it is used have not been given sufficient consideration. The question of basic unit stresses for bridges was discussed extensively and at many sessions by the Iron and Steel Committee of the American Railway Engineering Association.
