The New York State Barge Canal and its Operation

During 1925 the New York State Barge Canal and its operation was discussed at considerable length throughout the State of New York. This was due in part at least to the functioning of a special legislative commission created for the purpose of ascertaining why the canal was not handling a greater tonnage and of determining what could be done to stimulate traffic. The effectiveness and economic feasibility of this type of waterway have been questioned, although prior to its construction in 1903 it was pronounced by engineering experts of recognized ability as the proper type of undertaking to afford a superior waterway connection between the Great Lakes and the seaboard.
