Lower Flow Regime Bedforms: Rational Classification
Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 108, Issue 3
Abstract
A classification of lower flow regime bedforms is proposed, based upon consideration of the effect of water flow on the shape and size of bedforms, which is more rational than other systems presently in use. It is suggested that a more quantitative system of bedform classification may lead to a better understanding of the occurrence and behaviour of bedforms. The assumptions on which the proposed classification is based are shown to agree with published data relating bedform characteristics to mean flow depth and velocity. The proposed classification offers a rational explanation for several hitherto puzzling aspects of bedform behaviour in laboratory and field situations. Since much presently available data is unsuited to testing these proposals, further extensive experimental work on bedforms is required.
