Abstract
The efficient management of a confined aquifer with multiple wells under steady conditions is considered. Aquifer hydraulics is modelled by the finite element method, and the optimization framework is linear programming. The variability in the results of the optimization model due to differences in the basic element chosen (triangular or mixed curved isoparametric) and fineness of discretization is studied. The concept of free variable is found to be useful in the simultaneous consideration of the possibilities of discharge or recharge and the existing pumpage at a well location. The potentials for and limitations of the model in estimating the maximum safe yield from a regional aquifer system possessing significant heterogeneity are assessed.
