Optimal Design of Gravity Flow Water Conduits
Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 106, Issue 9
Abstract
A method based on the Pontryagin Maximum Principle for the optimal design of water conduits is described. Even though the method is general, the design of gravity water conduits using only a discrete set of diameters is treated in detail. It is shown how the design problem can be reduced to a two point boundary value problem, and a graphical method for its solution is presented. Two design examples are included. The conditions that should be modified to deal with other design problems, such as those considering pumping costs, are indicated.
