Abstract

Successive instances in the development of hydraulics are cited in which conditions were not as they are generally assumed to have been. Emphasis is laid upon problems of fluid resistance, beginning with Nature's abhorrence of a vacuum at the time of Aristotle and extending to the relative-roughness diagrams of the very recent past.
