Abstract
This state-of-the-art on the Environmental Protection Agency's research in urban stormwater and combined sewer overflow pollution control describes the major elements of the Urban Runoff Pollution Control Program. Problem definition, users assistance tools, management alternatives and technology transfer are covered, including some of the highlights of the Program's future direction and products from over 150 of its research projects. Capital cost comparisons for storm and combined sewer control and treatment are given, along with a specific example of cost-effect solution for urban runoff pollution control by in-line storage in Seattle. In a study done in Des Moines, using a simplified receiving water model, four control alternatives were compared, considering cost and effectiveness in terms of a frequency of dissolved oxygen standard violations.
