Abstract
Mathematical and physical modeling makes possible quantitative predictions as regards the destratification process brought abount by the local injection of air at the bottom of a thermally stratified lake or reservoir. The mathematical model distinguished between a near field and a far field. Mixing of epilimnion water and hypolimnion water takes place in the near field. The mixing water is accumulated in the far field as an interlayer between epilimnion and hypolimnion. The influence of wind on the mixing is not considered. The agreement between theory and model experiments is satisfactory, but further measurements in nature are needed. Increasing the number of injection points is an effective means to speed up the destratification process. Increasing the air flow rate, however, is not.
