Transient Finite Element Shallow Lake Circulation
Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 103, Issue 2
Abstract
The paper presents a fast method of computing the three-dimensional time-dependent circulation in shallow homogeneous lakes. The Laplace tranform is used to remove the time dependence and enable a vertical integration of the basic equations. The resulting two-dimensional problem is treated numerically by a finite element analysis. The method then employs a numerical transform inversion in order to return to the physical variables. The result is a technique which is more than an order of magnitude faster than the time stepping method. Numerical results are compared to those obtained by other methods.
