Abstract
Floods for a given return period are calculated on the assumption that the parent flood population conforms to a theoretical model. Purpose of the SMEMAX transformation is to normalize observed flood data, thereby facilitating the computation of long-term floods. Analyses of flood data of 65 rivers in the Northwest corroborate the effectiveness and utility of the SMEMAX transformation, and comparison of the results with those obtained by standard methods reveals the adequacy of the method.
