Abstract
The basic equations for wind-driven flows in deep two-layered lakes are outlined. The deepening of the upper layer due to entrainment of more dense water from the lower layer is explained physically, and the entrainment is then related to the wind shear stress at the water surface and an overall Richardson number. The general shapes of the distributions of shear stress and velocity are outlined. Diffusion and dispersion coefficients are calculated and related to the depth of the upper layer and to the wind shear stress at the surface.
