Abstract
Shear stress distributions were measured around the periphery of a channel of complex cross section using Preston tube. The complex section consists of a deep channel and a flood plain. The measurements were carried out in the laboratory for flow in the full cross section and when the flow was confined to the deep section. In this way it was possible to compare shear stress distributions under both isolated and interacting conditions. This has revealed that the presence of the interaction between a channel and its flood plain has significantly altered the values and distributions of boundary shear.
