Run Hydrographs from Poisson Generated Run Lengths

Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 100, Issue 11

Abstract

A transformation on the continuous instantaneous hydrograph for the Vaal River at Sanderton allows use of the seasonal cycle in streamflow to increase the occurrence of rare events. The level-crossing theory applied on the transformed hydrograph lead to the postulation of a Poisson generating process for surplus run lengths. Making use of the relative frequency of occurrence of surplus run lengths of various magnitudes at selected truncation levels enables the extraction of composite flood hydrographs with desired return periods. These composite flood hydrographs were called run hydrographs.
