Abstract
A function expressing the rate of removal of bed is presented in terms of the following variables: local velocity; coefficient of drag; particle diameter; bed slope; angle of repose; and fluid density in the vicinity of the particle. The variables of the function are established by consideration of the forces acting on a typical surface particle. The functional relationship was established by the results of an experimental study. The sediment-pickup function is formulated as a local rate of bed removal in order to be able to incorporate the function in the differential form of the equation of continuity.
