Flood Wave Modification Along Prismatic Channels
Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 95, Issue 5
Abstract
The general behavior of a flood wave propagating along a prismatic channel is examined. It is pointed out that attenuation is not always to be expected, and a criterion for discriminating attenuation and amplification of flood waves is stated, that is quite similar to the analogous criterion deduced by many authors for infinitesimal perturbations. An approximate procedure for flood waves that are approximately fitted by a triangular shape is developed; a set of nondimensional graphs is deduced which may be used to predict the modification with respect to time of a triangular wave in dependence of two parameters called attenuation and distortion-coefficient. A simple formula is suggested to calculate peak attenuation or amplification, which does not depend on the distortion coefficient. Comparisons with experimental tests are referred to in the last section and seem to be quite satisfactory. Some auxiliary elements are given for facilitating computations in part-full circular pipes.
