Abstract
A theoretical analysis of the head losses occurring in 180○ open channel bends is developed based on the moment of momentum and continuity principles. Experimental data with various flow conditions and several bend geometries are presented to check the theory. Circular arc guide vanes are used as a means of minimizing the total head losses and, on the average, these reduced the losses by 67%. Conditions causing a hydraulic jump immediately downstream from the bend and the means for its elimination are also considered.
