Abstract

Cyclic pumping is the withdrawal of ground water by regularly alternating pumping and recovery periods. Formation loss at the end of any pumping period can conveniently be expressed as the sum of two components, single-period loss and cycling loss. At the end of any recovery period there is only a cycling-loss component. Single-period loss is the total formation loss at the end of the first pumping period; cycling loss depends on certain functions called the cycling functions. The nature of the cycling functions and methods for their computation are discussed. Results can be applied to drawdown calculations for the pumped well or for any observation well and for either simple or complex cycling schedules.
