Abstract
The results of tests on a full-size smooth pipe hood inlet spillway confirmed the results of model studies made with smooth pipe hood inlets. However, tests with corrugated and concrete pipe spillways with hood inlets did not perform as predicted by the model studies in that a higher head was required to cause these pipe spillways to flow full. This was due to the pipe boundary downstream from the hood inlet and not to the hood inlet itself. Vortex activity developed with the hood inlet pipe spillway when no anti-vortex device was used. The two anti-vortex devices studied in the full-size tests were effective in preventing vortex activity.
