Abstract
Satisfactory reproduction of natural tides in movable bed hydraulic models was obtained with a specially developed simple tidal mechanism. The water level in the model is altered by either pumping water from the model basin into a storage tank or by allowing the water to flow back into the model through a solenoid-operated valve. The operation of both the pump and the valve is controlled by a tidal synthesizer that mechanically combines the effects of the principal harmonic tidal components and through a float assures the correct reproduction of the natural tides in the model. Up to four tidal components can be included. A construction drawing of the apparatus and a wiring diagram are presented. The apparatus, which is simple to make, reproduced the tide in movable bed model studies of Durban harbor and St. Lucia estuary to the required degree of accuracy.
