Abstract
An ideal fluid is used to approximate the two-dimensional flow of a real fluid over sills in an open channel. The computation of the location of the free surface, the velocity, and the pressure at any point in the flow is made possible by a general theory that used complex function theory and conformal mapping. This general theory is derived by considering flow over a simple, vertical step in an open channel. The theory is expanded to include flow over polygonal sills and, finally, to cover flow over smooth sills and through smooth transitions. Numerical examples are given for particular flow configurations.
