Abstract
A method used by the Soil Conservation Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, for determining the minimum capacity requirement for emergency spillways on small structures (providing less than 25,000 acre-ft of storage at the crest of the emergency spillway) is described. It is adapted to situations in which limited hydrologic data are available. Flood runoff is estimated from the effects of the physical aspects of the watershed on storm rainfall. Storm rainfall depths are described for the contiguous United States. The application of families of dimensionless hydrographs, predeveloped from dimensionless unit hydrographs, is explained briefly.
