Abstract
An accurate assessment of salinity problems in an irrigated area requires detailed knowledge not only of the hydrology, but many other unique physical and institutional characteristics of the area being studied. Even though each area must be evaluated individually, because of the site-specific nature of irrigated agriculture, definite procedures are common to all evaluations. A framework for planning a salinity control program has been developed which can be applied to any individual irrigated valley or to an entire river basin. The salinity control planning framework consists of three phases: (l)Identification of salinity problems; (2)development of best management practices; and (3)implementation of best management practices. The planning steps in each phase are considered.
