Large Rubble-Mound Breakwater Failures

Abstract
Failures of some recent large rubble-mound breakwater have motivated a series of investigations into their causes. Opinions have differed widely. It is the purpose of this brief note to describe a major factor about such structures that has not been considered. The mechanism by which waves cause large internal water pressures of a dynamic character is outlined. Research into the quantitative effects of this phenomenon is recommended as a benefit to future designs.
