Abstract
Stability conditions for hydrodynamic models can be exceeded if the appropirate terms in the governing equations are approximated with implicit differences. If, in addition, the coefficient matrix for the resulting matrix equations is designed to be time invariant, an efficient simulation technique results. These features are exploited in a finite element-finite difference model of water circulation. The technique, which solves the vertically integrated Navier-Stokes equations, is used to simulate the circulation in a natural embayment where stability requirements for existing techniques would significantly restrict the size of the time step.
